How to format in-text citations and References page with examples

References Page

The References page is the final element in your paper. It is a list of every source used in your paper. The list of sources must follow the format APA requires for the source type and be listed alphabetically on your page based on the first word of each citation (usually an author's last name, sometimes title of work). All content on page is double spaced.

Each source mentioned in your paper (all those in-text parenthetical citations you made) needs to have a matching citation on your References page that includes all the information on that source so that the readers can easily retrieve that source themselves.

Each entry on your reference list has four elements:

  • Author
  • Date
  • Title
  • Source

A typical reference list entry, will have authors' names (listed as last name, first initial), the year published in parentheses, The title of the work (only the first letter is capitalized as though you were writing a sentence, also capitalize the first word after a colon), title of the source in italics (usually a journal title), Volume and Issue (if from a journal) with the issue in parentheses, page numbers, and DOI.
