What are Open Educational Resources?

Open Educational Resources (OER)  are freely available educational media that supplement or replace traditional textbooks.  No cost (beyond printing) is one key benefit to students.  No less valuable is the flexibility afforded by OERs which instructors and students may use, share, adapt, and repurpose. The University of Georgia has found that college students provided with free course materials at the beginning of a semester demonstrate greater success in a number of metrics than those who are not provided with free course materials. OERs include, but aren't limited to:

  • Learning content
    • textbooks, reports, articles, and other documents
    • video and audio clips
    • course syllabi, lesson plans, bibliographies, lecture notes, quizzes, and assignments
  • Software and operating systems
    • course management systems
    • desktop publishing programs
    • video editing programs
    • webpage editing programs
  • Intellectual property and copyright licenses
