How to format citations with examples for Notes Bibliography and Author-Date systems

Paper Formatting

Paper formatting is how the writing appears on the page or its presentation. The CMOS guide for paper formatting includes:

  • 1" to 1.5" margins
  • a title page that lists
    • the title of the paper (written in all caps, placed 1/3 of the way down on the page)
    • your name, department or college name, course title, instructor's name, and date (several lines below the title of the paper).
    • All of these elements are centered on the page.
  • Page numbers
    • starting on the first page of your work (not on title page)
    • appearing in a running header with .5 inch margin
  • Sans serif font (like Times New Roman), size 12
  • Double space
  • Block long quotation or "prose quotation"
    • direct quote of five or more lines
    • single spaced, every line is indented so it resembles a "block"
    • and without quotation marks
  • List of all citations at end of paper (Citations are single spaced, but double spaced between entries)

Again, your instructor may have variations on the requirements (such as no title page), be sure to check your syllabus, the assignment's instructions, etc.
