Start with Us! Culturally Relevant Pedagogy in the Preschool Classroom. Using an ethnographic case study approach, we examined how teachers and parents within an ethnically diverse early childhood program conceptualized and implemented culturally relevant pedagogy and how these primary caregivers were encouraging children's socio-cultural development and awareness. Data sources included questionnaires, interview transcripts, and observational field notes (classroom and community). Findings suggest there were multiple strategies and resources teachers used to facilitate the socio-cultural growth of young children indicative of culturally relevant practices.

Fathers’ Representation in Observational Studies on Parenting and Childhood Obesity: A Systematic Review and Content Analysis Objectives. To conduct a systematic review and quantitative content analysis of observational studies on parenting and childhood obesity to (1) document the inclusion of fathers, relative to mothers, as research participants and (2) examine characteristics of studies that did and did not include fathers. This study presents new data on the number and gender of parent research participants.

Living with a Crucial Decision: A Qualitative Study of Parental Narratives Three Years after the Loss of Their Newborn in the NICU Methods: The study used a retrospective longitudinal design with a qualitative analysis of parental experience 3 years after the death of their child in four NICUs in France. 53 face-to-face interviews and 80 telephone interviews were conducted with 164 individuals. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore how parents perceived their role in the decision process, what they valued about physicians’ attitudes in this situation and whether their long-term emotional well being varied according to their perceived role in the EOL DMP.

EXAMINING THE PARTICIPATION OF PRESCHOOL CHILDREN IN THE WRITING CENTER DURING FREE CHOICE TIMES. This study investigated the participation of children at the writing center in their classroom during free choice time. For this study, four and five year-old children in the classroom were observed during 20 free choice times, each one of which was one hour. 1 developed a coding system related to the activities that were intended to develop the children's writing skills. I observed and coded 69 children in the writing center. How these children used the writing center was coded with respect to frequency, gender, and activity.

Differences in park characteristic preferences for visitation and physical activity among adolescents: A latent class analysis In order to optimize environmental interventions, the current study aimed to investigate whether there are subgroups with different preferences regarding park characteristics for park visitation and park-based PA among adolescents (12–16 years).

Environmental and social-motivational contextual factors related to youth physical activity: systematic observations of summer day camps Youth risk of obesity is high during the summer months. Summer day camps can be ideal settings for preventing obesity through reducing youth summer sedentary behaviors. However, with limited research on camp settings, the mechanisms by which these programs promote children’s physical activity (PA) remains largely unknown. The current study was designed to take a first step in addressing this gap in research through systematic observations of 4 summer day camps.

Exploring Students’ Conception and Expectations of Achievement in Physical Education A qualitative study design was employed to answer the research questions. Data were primarily collected from three sources: curriculum documents, observation, and cognitive interviewing. After located the county curriculum guide, the researcher observed physical education classes for eight weeks, two classes each time, averaging two or three times per week. After each observation, the researcher wrote observation notes on the content, student engagement, teaching, and student interaction. At the end of observation, the researcher selected six or seven students from each class for follow-up interviews.

Frequent daytime naps predict vocabulary growth in early childhood Sleep and Naps Oxford Research Inventory (SNORI). The SNORI is an easily usable, handy sleep diary in the form of an A/5 booklet, which fits easily into handbags and onto bedside tables. The diary contains a separate page for each day with visual aids to distinguish daytime and night-time.
