MLA Citations

How to give credit to your sources using The Modern Language Association of America (MLA)

Works Cited Page

The Works Cited page is the final element in your paper. It is a list of every source used in your paper. Double space all content on page. The list of sources must follow the format MLA details for the source type and be listed alphabetically on your page based on the first word of each citation (usually an author's last name, sometimes title of work, etc.)

Each source mentioned in your paper (all those in-text parenthetical citations you made) needs to have a matching citation on your Works Cited page that includes all the information on that source.

In MLA, a Works CIted citation is composed of 9 Core Elements:

  • Author
  • Title of Source
  • Title of Container
  • Other Contributors
  • Version
  • Number
  • Publisher
  • Publication Date
  • Location

Words like "container," "contributor," and "location"  maybe confusing at first. In order to be flexible for a variety of source types, MLA describes them in more general terms. Container is often the title of the periodical the article you quoted came from, or it may be the title of a book. Contributors are those who helped make this work (often an editor) and location may be the page number if a written work, DOI if online article, or the physical building an experience took place if referencing a live event.

It's also important to note that most sources will not have all elements. Simply include what information the source does have based on its type.
